National Coffee Day 2014!

EEEEK! Its National Coffee Day! You know I'm celebrating by downing coffee all day long; would you expect anything less? Let's cut to the chase then; places to get free coffee (thank goodness Fox News had the insider info)!

1. Dunkin' Donuts: free medium cup of dark roast!
coffee-ending
(http://www.catholicvote.org/caffeinated-graces-or-why-giving-
up-coffee-is-a-very-very-bad-idea/)

2. Krispy Kreme: free 12 oz. dark roast!

3. McDonald's: free small coffee (only through breakfast, so hurry!)

4. Caribou Coffee: free sample of Amy's Blend

5. Starbucks: free tasting of the Anniversary blend until noon

Gosh this day is the BEST! So many opportunities for free coffee. Or, if you're just feeling like brewing up a good cup at home, here's a little recipe I stumbled upon accidentally in my kitchen the other day!

Coconut Mocha Coffee
Serves 1

1 cup strong brewed coffee (espresso roast would be optimal here)
1/4 cup coconut milk
1 teaspoon dutch-processed cocoa powder (I used Rodelle which is gluten free-a rarity in cocoa powders)
optional-added agave nectar/honey/maple syrup if you want it sweet

Whisk the coconut milk and cocoa powder together, then slowly pour into the coffee while whisking (or use an awesome milk frother which is way more fun). That's it! Enjoy!

Hope you have an amazing National Coffee Day this year; cheers to double the cups you usually drink!

Afternoons at Starbucks: BOGO!

Happy Friday my friends!! I hope this finds you doing wonderful. I was planning on sharing some new kitchen faves I've found (thanks, Whole Foods!) and pre-Thanksgiving thoughts, but then I remembered I must share some coffee news! My other ramblings can wait. ;)

Starbucks has buy one, get one free on holiday beverages from 2-5 pm through Sunday (November 17th)! From what I remember, caramel brulée lattes are bomb. At any rate, its a perfect opportunity to share some coffee/holiday love; whose day isn't made by a free surprise coffee??

While still on the coffee topic, I've found a wonderful new one! Dunkin' Donuts apparently released a bakery series and it includes chocolate glazed donut coffee! I found it at Target and bought it as a thanks-for-all-the-coffee gift but got to try a cup (I sound like an awful gift giver, don't I?); it was SO good with a splash of vanilla creamer! Yumsville.

Next: I found my all-time favorite dressing at Whole Foods!! I discovered it among the lettuces and kale in the produce section and was super excited! Now, it IS oil-free, but that's not why I like it. I have nothing against oils and love using olive oil, but SO many salad dressings use soybean oil rather than olive oil and it is annoying. This is the first salad dressing I've been able to have (with the exception of ones I make at home) since I found out about my food allergies, and it is delicious! If any of you are like me and struggle making your own dressings (I somehow only make two servings worth...) you will appreciate this product even more. Plus its from Whole Foods so you know its preservative/lame ingredient-free! ;) If you need help finding it, check out the bottle.

image from http://garlicgirl.com/2012/01/07/purple-kale-chips/
LASTLY: I snagged some lovely purple kale on my last trip to Whole Foods (honestly, they don't pay me to advertise their awesomeness!) and tried it out on my fave kale recipe, aka kale chips. I think it might make even better kale chips than the curly-leaf kale I usually buy! Could this be solely because of its pretty color? Possibly (judge me if you will). But it seemed to have a slightly heartier texture that held up really well after being baked, making the chips crispier. Either way, it was purple and from an Iowa farmer and I was thrilled! Lots of veggies are green, so you mind as well switch it up with some purple. ;)

That's all I've got for today! Next time we'll talk allergy-free Thanksgiving recipes, YAY!! Have a splendid weekend. :)

Happy National Coffee Day!

Hooray, its here! The day all us coffee lovers unite in bliss to drink even more coffee than we usually do in celebration! I hope your morning was highly caffeinated; now I have some news to get the java flowing through your veins this afternoon as well!

FREE.COFFEE.

That's right! Some of your favorite (chain) coffee joints are inviting you to spruce up your day with free coffee, and if I were you I would hop in my car/on my bike/in my tennies and accept that invite! Here's the down low on your free cafe:

Caribou Coffee: Show this to your barista and you're golden.

Dunkin' Donuts: Download the free Dunkin' Donuts app and that's that! (Read more here)

Starbucks: Enjoy a free tasting of their Ethiopian coffee, no strings attached.

Raise your mug to free coffee and fellow coffee lovers around the world celebrating with you. Sip it, savor it, maybe order a latte. This day only comes around once a year; make the most of it. Its worth the jittery hands. ;) Yours in caffeinated contentment,

Let's Talk {Iced} Coffee

Coming at your from this hot Saturday evening in DSM! Hope your weekend has been fabulous so far.

Guess what? I'm crossing off a bucket list item. That's right, I've become a barista!! Along with grad school I'll be whipping up drinks left and right, a continuous blissful smile on my face because it is SO fun!! Seriously, as crazy as it may sound I'm so pumped about it. :)

File:Blue Bottle, Kyoto Style Ice Coffee (5909775445).jpg
The whole barista thing brings us to one of my favorite summer topics: iced coffee! It is so good on hot days when the steaming cup looks just a little too steamy and it adds another dimension to coffee love. It is so easy to do without watering it down! The key to success is planning ahead (say whaaaa?). It works best if you brew your coffee the night before! I shall explain.

Iced Coffee

Brew coffee as you would normally, but put in 1.5 times the amount you normally use for hot coffee. When it is done brewing, pour it into a pitcher and let it sit out at room temperature for 30 minutes before putting it in the fridge overnight. This allows it to be cold enough not to melt the ice much and water down your cup!

In the morning, toss 5-6 ice cubes in a glass and pour your coffee over. Add in your favorite creamer, or one of these options:

1 Tbsp. coconut milk + agave nectar to taste
1 Tbsp. almondmilk + a dash of cinnamon
1 Tbsp. 2% (or skim) milk + honey to taste
1 Tbsp. almondmilk + a drop of vanilla and sweetener to taste
1 Tbsp. coconut milk + maple syrup + cinnamon

The possibilities are endless! Get creative. Get wild. Daydream about iced coffee, then go make some. It even counts as dessert. ;)

Have a blast with your Saturday evening!! Cheers.

Starbucks: Half Off Deliciousness

Happy Friday!!!! Hope you had a marvelous week! I'm so sorry for such a long break from posting; a family emergency gave me total writer's block, but I'm back in action!

EXCITING NEWS: we closed on our house! Now we're attempting (in a futile way, I might add) to get settled in and make it seem like our own, but besides the coffeepot, most items are still nestled in their boxes, nice and cozy. ;)

MORE EXCITING NEWS: Starbucks introduced a new refresher flavor and they're giving all refreshers at half off through tomorrow, from 3-5 pm! Check out this link for the details.
Wake up your afternoon. New Valencia Orange. New Very Berry Hibiscus. Cool Lime.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: (sorry for all the shouting...) What kind of workout are you in the mood for? I need to write up a new one but sometimes I struggle to nail down exactly what I think people are wanting in a workout. Endurance? Total body? Weights included or not?? Any insight is much appreciated. :)

I'm off to finish up cleaning this empty apartment (yes, I've been putting it off for a few minutes by blogging). Cheers to a wonderful weekend!

In a Coffee Rut?

Hello and happy Monday! I apologize for my longer-than-normal lack of post, I'm blaming it on the hustle of buying a house and such. ;) But I have returned with something a bit different for today!

In honor of Small Business Week (Google told me so it must be true), I'm giving a shout out to locally owned coffee shops. As much as myself and billions of others love Starbucks and Caribou Coffee, we know they pull in oodles of money from their delicious coffee drinks. In the coffee world, any small coffee shop that succeeds has stood among the giants and deserves some credit. Local coffee shops always have their own unique atmosphere that I love!! Java Joe's has tons of games you can play while you sip (Mancala anyone??) while others serve up legendary milkshakes right alongside their lattes (Smokey Row's!). Plus, the array of special drinks is too good to pass up.

So, hop on over to Google for the 47th time today and type in coffee shops to find a new one.

Now, there are two kinds of coffee ruts. One is when you need to switch up your coffee outing experience, as we just discussed. The other is when you're bored with your brew at home. Alas, we've all been there. Here are my fave options for when the boredom strikes:

1. Pick up a few $1.00 "trial" packets of flavored coffee in the coffee aisle. This way you get to try a bunch without committing to 40 brews of the same flavor.

2. Brew your coffee super strong and pour it over some ice. Maybe even in your iced coffee to-go cup you own (I know I'm not the only one that owns one...). Voila, summer coffee!

3. Sprinkle some cinnamon into your cup. Seriously, its wonderful whether you drink it straight black or mostly cream with a dash of coffee. :)

4. Toss a cup (and some extra ice)  into your banana smoothie and pat yourself on the back for caffeinating your breakfast like a champ.

5. Stir a bit of a hot cocoa mix into your coffee! (This is not my own idea, I learned it from another coffee-obsessed friend. Talk about innovative!).

Ruts are lame and shouldn't be hung out in for long. Go brew a new pot, and I'll talk to you again soon! ;)

Girl Scout Creamer and Smoothies!

Hi everyone! How was your weekend and your Mother's Day?? Hopefully you told your mom how amazing she was and wined and dined her! Or at least took her to brunch. ;) We spent the weekend with my in-laws and brother-in-law at a basketball tournament and it was a blast! I forgot about the basketball tournament life; playing three games in a matter of 5 hours in a gym with 4 games going on at once. Its not glamorous but it was kind of fun! Anyways.

First. A new coffee creamer. It is so delicious, let me tell you! Its based on those coconut and caramel Girl Scout cookies. What are those called?! Ah, yes, Samoa. Thank you, Google. Though I haven't had one in forever, I'm pretty sure it makes your coffee taste just like one.

It is so good. I find myself debating drinking extra cups after I finish my usual number just for the goodness. ;) I found it at Hy-Vee but I've heard it will be at Target and other grocery stores as well! There's also a thin mint flavor. So that's real.

Next! Its supposed to be 90 here today, which means sharing a cold smoothie is totally called for! :) This has been my new go-to smoothie; the creaminess and the peanut butter-ness is a perfect duo. Plus, it takes two minutes to make, no exaggeration. Feel free to add in some Greek yogurt for more protein!!

Banana Love Smoothie
serves 1

1 banana, sliced into small pieces and frozen
4 slices frozen peach
1/2 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon peanut butter
milk of your choice (or water if you want it less creamy)

In a magic bullet cup or blender, add the banana and peach. Pour in your orange juice, then add the peanut butter on top. Pour in milk until it is close to the top of the frozen fruit, but not covering it. (If you want a thinner smoothie, keep pouring until it covers the frozen fruit). Put on the lid and blend for 1 minute until you can see any chunks or hear any being blended! Sit outside or inside your 80 degree apartment and enjoy. :)

Nutrition (using about 1/2 cup of almondmilk): 285 calories, 8 grams fat, 6.1 grams protein

This is perfect for adding to your breakfast or lunch, or having as a snack! It'd be perfect for after a workout if you tossed in some protein powder or Greek yogurt to up the protein. And did I mention it tastes really good?? :)

Enjoy the heat today! Remember our days of snow and bitter cold to stop yourself from cursing it when you have to turn on the AC in your car. ;) Happy Tuesday!

Spring: Outside Workouts and Cheap Frappucinos

Good afternoon! Coming at you from West Des Moines, where it is 34 degrees and snowing. YAY! I hear the eastern part of the state is having better luck as of now; fingers crossed the May snow somehow misses you! In the meantime, I walked past a worm heading into my apartment and shook my head. What are you doing worm?! I'm pretty sure 34 degrees isn't even livable for a worm. Its like it forgot it was in Iowa....anyways. Back to real things. ;)

Today's post is all about things you aren't thinking about when its snowing: exercise outside and cold coffee drinks! But alas, the weather must turn back to somewhat normal sometime here soon, and you'll be enjoying said things. Let's start things off with an interval workout! This is straight up track practice at its finest (so an easier day), but it is good stuff and its a great workout for when you're not running track. This workout is very easily adjusted. The more you do, the harder it is. If you're just starting out, try 5-6 and see how you feel. If you run on the daily, you can look at somewhere between 10 and 15.

Sprints/Strides Workout

Location: Track/football field/random grassy area*
*the random grassy area requires a stopwatch, the other two don't really need one.

Warm-up: jog for at least 5 minutes. Dynamic stretches: leg swings, walking quad and hamstring stretches.

Workout: Starting on a straightaway (or at one end of the field), run hard (but not all-out on the first one) to the other end of the field/the end of the straightaway. (If on a grassy area and using a watch, shoot for 20 seconds on the first few sprints. If that feels too easy, you can bump it to 25 or 30 seconds).
Walk back to where you started.
Rest 90 seconds to 2.5 minutes, depending on how long it takes your HR to slow down to where you aren't panting.
Repeat, running a little faster on your second and third reps. By your 4th, you should be at your top "sprint" speed.
Beginners: 5-6 reps.
Intermediate: 8-10 reps.
"All-I-do-is-sprint"ers: 10-15 reps, depending on how you feel.

Note: it is important to take the short rest between each rep. The first few won't feel like you need to rest, but the main point of an interval workout is the drastic increase in heart rate between reps, so you don't want to keep your HR up really high during the entire workout. Its best to let it drop a little (but NOT to resting!) before starting another rep.

Let me know if you have any questions/concerns on this workout! If not, wait patiently until its nice out again (fingers crossed that's in the next few days!) so you can try it out. :)

Next topic: cheap frappuccinos! Let's not pretend this isn't amazing, because it is. During this week last year in Iowa City (which also happened to be finals week; did Starbucks plan that?!), the line for Starbucks was seriously 40 people long. Caffeine, sugar, saving money, what more could a college student ask for?

Summer starts at Starbucks
The deal starts tomorrow buuuut it runs until the 12th so surely there will be a sunny, warmish day by then. :)

That's a wrap! Have a wonderful rest of your Thursday friends!

Happy Earth Day! Celebrate With Free Coffee

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend? Mine was great! I ran my first half marathon yesterday morning back in Marion, Iowa and it went really well! I was hoping for 1:40 or under and hit right at 1:40 so I was happy :) The wind was crazy but it was a really good race and I felt so much better than I thought I would, especially between miles 10 and 13.1 ;) I probably wouldn't have done as well without all my awesome family (in-laws included!) cheering me on every few miles; I'm so blessed!

Happy Earth Day! The Earth Day website has this cool ecological footprint quiz you can take to find out how much you impact the earth as well as ideas to lower your impact! Want another way to celebrate that involves coffee? Of course you do :)

YAY! All you have to supply is your reusable mug and the free coffee is all yours :) Plus, Caribou is planting trees for all of its Facebook likes, which is pretty cool too!

Free coffee and free fruit trees, what more could you want?! Alright, I better take it easy, I'm starting to sound like I work for Caribou! (but I don't. teehee)

That's all I've got for you today; have a wonderful Monday and stay fabulous!

The Ultimate Foamy-Coffee-Drink-Lover's Tool

Hello, hello! It is Tuesday night and I'm blogging; who knows what's going on? Just kidding; I sort of do. ;) This is a super-quick post because I had a thought pop into my head that I wanted to share! Don't worry, I should be back tomorrow with a healthified recipe :)

Are you one of those coffee drinkers who puts something in their coffee? I'm talking to a wide variety of coffee drinkers; from the "splash of milk"-ers to the "4 creams, 6 sugar packets and a dollop of whip"-ers (no judgment passed; my start as a coffee drinker consisted of these). Come one, come all and revel in the wonders of....

The milk frother!

This baby whips up any milk-infused coffee (or other non-coffee items, such as hot chocolate) drink you'd like, adding a nice foamy top to your drink! Another bonus in addition to the awesome foaminess? Its so fun to use! You put the wired top in your drink, turn it on and listen to its little motor buzz as it creates foam. Your drinks look much closer to that of professionals (read: coffee shops) than they ever have before! ;) Need another reason to buy one? They are a steal! I found mine a while back at World Market, and I just found a 3-pack on their website for...$8.95! You can check them out here; keep one and give away two as gifts. They are also available at Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Walmart etc. for somewhere between $15 and $20.

I mean look at this Starbucks cappuccino. Don't we all strive for that kind of foam beauty in our everyday coffee drinking?

Enough coffee inspiration for the night; I'll froth some up in the morning! Over and out.

Best Valentine's Gift Ever {Coffee BOGO is Involved}

Hello, hello and Happy Valentine's Day! I'm sorry if you hate this day with a burning passion, but I think its a fun day to do something to show the person you love some love! If you don't like boring roses and boxed chocolates, try thinking outside the box! I've got something you could surprise a loved one with...

That's right, a V-Day BOGO at Caribou Coffee!! A perfect opportunity to drop off an afternoon, caffeinated  pick-me-up :)

Not a coffee lover?? Then surprise them with a home-cooked meal or their fave movie and snacks. It really is the thought that counts (unless you're expecting diamonds, then that's a whole different story ;) )!

Sorry to make this short, but I've got to dash! I'll be back with a recipe for you to cook up, and perhaps even a little workout to do in this sunshine that's coming up on Sunday {fingers crossed!} :) Make sure to tell someone you love them! Your mom totally counts. :)

{Free} Coffee is Love

Hey guys! Gosh, it has been way too long since I've blogged! I've been working a ton and seem to hardly have time to drink enough coffee for the day, which is a crime in itself ;) But I come bearing good news! Coffee-related good news, in fact, which is even more exciting!

Share drinks with someone you love. Buy one featured drink and share one on us. Through February 14 after 2pm. Hot Chocolate, Vanilla Spice Latte and Caffè Mocha
Print or show this offer on your mobile device. Offer code 915. Ends 2/14/13.

Hooray! Take your bestie, your mom, your other half, or maybe even that random girl in your Pilates class and enjoy a free hot chocolate, vanilla spice latte or caffe mocha on Starbucks anytime after 2 pm! Just in time for Valentine's Day ;) Another reason to celebrate it!

Starbucks seems to be loving me this month, because I also got an email from them saying my next drink is on them!!! All those gift cards from Christmas on my gold card sure are paying off, eh? ;)

When it comes to handling stress, coffee is actually my #2 go-to, second only to exercise! My personal faves are going for a run until the anger drips off with the sweat, doing some power yoga and letting the sweat do its job again, or doing heavy medicine ball slams. Seriously, they all work. If you don't believe me, find a 12 pound or heavier med ball next time you're at the gym and give it a few good SLAMS, making sure to bring it all the way overhead each time! If that doesn't release a little pent-up anger/tension/stress, try doing it after running some sprints ;)

Do you have any secret magic ways of handling stress? Do share!! I'm off to run some errands, I plan to return much sooner than I did this time, with a yummy recipe in tow! Now, go take down the rest of your Thursday like a champ! ;)

Another Coffee BOGO!

Happy Friday!! Happy last day of November as well ;) This month flew by! I was done with my spinning class by 6:30 this morning, lifted a little and was home with a cup of coffee in hand by 7:05! Needless to say, I'm feeling energized. :) Plus, I have a few exciting things to share!

First, I joined Twitter! You can follow me @EatRunCoffee to get quick fitness tips or links to recipes and other lovely things here on my blog. I don't get any credit for this idea, one of my brilliant friends suggested it. Its so nice to have those brilliant people around, isn't it??

Second, my brother-in-law's extremely talented girlfriend is having her (that's right, she started it!! http://www.lovetwenty.com/) awesome magazine printed, and I'm going to have a recipe featured in it! Eeeeeh!!! I was so SO excited when she asked me to do this! I'm taking pictures of the making of the recipe today; stay tuned, I may share a few! :)

Last exciting thing to share: Caribou Coffee has a generous offer! Tomorrow is buy one, get one for 20 cents on any of their drinks! My coffee-obsessed self got the email and did a little cheer ;) Check it out!

So much excitement before 8:00 am! I'm off to get ready for work (but really to drink more coffee), I hope you have an exciting Friday!! :)

A rare, precious gem: Starbucks BOGO

Happy Thursday!! I hope your week is going great so far. I started my day off with power yoga at 6 am, so I'm feeling awesome so far! I got a free unlimited week of yoga at a new place right by me, if you're in the Des Moines area you should check it out! Their website is powerlifeyoga.com.

Guess what?! I got another glorious email from Starbucks (as most of them are) telling me some good news, and I'm going to share it!

Hooray! Bring a friend to Starbucks and toast to the half price-ness of BOGOs! :) If that doesn't make your Thursday, I don't know what will! Just try not to go every day of the BOGO, the amount of sugar in those lovely holiday drinks will make health nuts and your dentist alike shutter. ;) My trick is to cut way down on the pumps of syrup so it isn't so sweet! But still delish, obviously. Aaaand at an extra 100 calories for a tiny dollop, I usually cut that beautiful whipped topping. I swear they put something addictive in it... ;)

Drastic topic change; have any of you avid runners/work outers/fitness clothing fanatics seen the new Nike stay warm tights? I found myself in the Nike section (imagine that) and suddenly I was face to face with several pairs of colored long running tights! Could this be true?! I saw them at Dick's Sporting Goods, but haven't checked Scheels for these beauties yet. Nike makes plenty of brightly colored clothing, but their tights for outdoor winter running tend to be plain black. Not anymore! Another bonus? They were only $55! I'm pretty sure their long sleeved tops are that price, so I was super pumped at the not-breaking-the-bank price! Hello, Christmas list ;)

I found a recipe to healthify! I have started to change it, but haven't actually made it yet, so I will be putting up the healthified version and hopefully a few pictures in my next post! If you want to check out the original recipe, you can find it here!

I'm off to run before rallying through my work day! Let's see if my morning power yoga propels me through the day, easy breezy ;) Enjoy your Thursday!

A Coffee BOGO! {eeeh!}

Hi! Cheers to the fact that it is already Thursday! Where did this week go?? Somewhere between the hours I spent registering our new-ish car (Dallas County: 1 Kelsey: 0) and whipping people into shape (or so I hope; its fun to say at least), the week flew by! Alas, I have neglected my blogging, but I'm back with something exciting to make up for it. This little birdie came in my inbox, much to my delight, and made my weekend prospects look even better!

Hooray for buy one, get one free Caribou!! The perfect excuse to make a coffee run, plus it is for a good cause! Double whammy :)

Speaking of coffee (what's new?), I must share another nugget of info with you. I stopped at Target the other day (always dangerous, that place has too much good stuff!) and found myself face to face with some new flavors of coffee creamer! BOOM. Next thing I know, the Coffee-Mate Pecan Praline one is in my cart. I'm a Coffee-Mate girl, and after a few bad experiences with sub-par International Delight flavors, I don't even give those the time of day anymore! However, I shall not judge if you peruse the I.D. section of the creamer aisle, as they did have new flavors as well. Anyway, back to the pecan praline! The next morning I opened it up (I was too excited to finish off the little bit left of my vanilla caramel one) and added a bit to my coffee...oh, yum. It is delectable! It literally started off my day wonderfully. I raise my mug to the person who picked pecan praline as a flavor idea--he/she is a flavor master. If you have a love for pumpkin spice (as I know this time of year brings out that side of many of us), they have a seasonal pumpkin spice creamer as well, so head to your nearest Target/Hy-Vee and stock up while you can! :)

Are you a straight-black or creamer-with-a-splash-of-coffee drinker? I'm neither; a little creamer does just the trick! In a tight situation, I'll drink it black, but none of that adding half and half business, icky.

Well, I'm off to be productive! As well as save our apartment from the destruction that is our kitten...he's going through the rough teenage years. Have a lovely Thursday, I'll be back with more goodies for you soon!
